Visiting the Castle

Please note that most of Lancaster Castle’s history has been associated with crime, punishment and the enforcement of law. Castle tours include references to physical forms of punishment, including hanging.

OPENING HOURS AND TOUR INFORMATION 

Access to most of the castle interiors is by guided tour only.  Tours run daily throughout the year (except over Christmas).

In winter (last week of November 2024 through to March 2025), public tours normally* run at the following times:

  • Weekdays: 10:30, 12:15, 14:00 and 15:45.
  • Weekends: 10:00 – 15:45 at frequent intervals throughout the day (up to 11 tours per day).

From the 24th March to 13th July 2025 public tours normally* run at the following times:

  • Weekdays: 10:00 to 15:45 at intervals of 1 hour or less (up to 9 tours a day).
  • Weekends: 10:00 – 15:45 at frequent intervals throughout the day (up to 11 tours per day).

During the school summer holidays (14th July – 31st August) tours run 10:00 – 15:45 at frequent intervals throughout the day (up to 11 tours per day).

* All tour start times are subject to change or cancellation and visitors are advised to call ahead for information about a specific tour time.

The Police Museum (Thursday to Friday only), Witches’ Exhibition and Castle courtyards can be accessed free of charge and without joining a guided tour.

Tour Admission Charges:

  • Adults £9.00
  • Children up to the age of 18 – £7
  • Family Ticket £ 25 – two full price and 2 children; 1 full price and 3 children; 4 children (one of whom must be over 16 years)

Regrettably the tour route is not suitable for pushchairs or buggies. If your infant is able to walk, or you are able to carry your infant for the duration of the tour, there is a place where buggies can be left, on request, at your own risk. 

Likewise, the tour route is not suitable for wheelchairs. Visitors with limited mobility are welcome to call ahead on 01524 64998 if they have any questions or concerns.

For security reasons we are not able to store luggage on site.
